Signage in Toronto
Toronto signage has one constraint that decides most of the job before design begins: the storefront is usually narrow, often heritage, and frequently in a Business Improvement Area with its own guidance on top of the city's by-law. A sign that would be routine on a suburban plaza gets a much closer look on a Danforth or Roncesvalles frontage, and the review is about proportion and material as much as size.
That pushes the work toward window graphics, which need no permit in most cases and do a lot. Frosted etch vinyl at eye level gives a clinic or a studio privacy while still reading as finished rather than covered up. 50/50 perforated film lets staff see the street while the street sees the graphic, which suits a small retail unit where the window is also the only source of daylight. Solid white or coloured vinyl for hours, service lists and the things people check from outside before deciding to come in.
A-frames are the other Toronto staple, and the rules differ by district — sidewalk width, distance from the curb, and whether the BIA has its own view. We print 24 by 36 inch inserts so the frame is bought once and the graphic changes seasonally. Interior wayfinding rounds it out: suite numbers, capacity notices, directional signage for a walk-up. Measure the glass before designing anything. Toronto storefronts are rarely square, older frames eat more of the opening than people expect, and a graphic set to the advertised window size regularly arrives an inch too wide. Do I need a permit for window signage in Toronto?
Window graphics generally do not need a sign permit, though coverage limits can apply and some Business Improvement Areas have their own guidance. Anything projecting, illuminated or fixed to the fascia does need one from the City of Toronto.
Can you install signage in Toronto or is it supply only?
Window vinyl and A-frame inserts we supply cut and ready to apply, with instructions — most people manage a straightforward window themselves. For fascia signage and anything at height, use a licensed installer; we will produce to their measurements.
